M51 - Whirlpool Galaxy

The Whirlpool Galaxy is about 25 million light years from Earth. It was the first galaxy to be identified as a spiral, easily seen in photographs and large telescopes since it presents a face-on view to Earth.

  • There are at least 10 galaxies visible in this photo of M51. M51 and its companion NGC5195 are the closest, at 25-27 million light years. The most distant is the tiny smudge marked IC4285, over one BILLION light years away! It's amazing to realize that photons that began their journey when life was just beginning to emerge on Earth fell into my telescope and ended up in the camera.
